Forms and Conventions for Evaluation

These are the forms and conventions that we Used, Developed and Challenged.

Self Assment

SELF ASSESSMENT

Research and planning ___16_/20
WWW- Finding out what film noir was all about and the whole process as a whole was very uplifting, and interesting

EBI- For research and planning I think what could have used more technology effects with the i macs- would have been useful.

Construction __48__/60
WWW - I think as a group worked and meet our targets to complete our preliminary tasks on time and also each time we made a new draft we were able to add more costumes that suited our genre.
EBI - If we had more time to complete and clearer feedback.

Evaluation __14__/20
WWW - from the use of technologies with our opening sequence it was easy for us to use the mac and the different technologies required to complete our evaluation,
EBI- if we had more time because i felt kind of rushed; towards the end but it was still completed.

PARTNER 1 __73__/100 Effort? (Level 1-4) Adriana
WWW - I worked well with Adriana she helped ALOT with the filming and everything
EBI - None
PARTNER 2 ___68_/100 Effort? (Level 1-4) Mica
WWW - The acting was great she did us a big favour and even with the costumes as well
EBI-
PARTNER 3 __67__/100 Effort? (Level 1-4) Victoria
WWW- Helped along with the filming process and her ideas were really good and her contribution was effective to how we developed our ideas.

what we did as we got a LAST CHANCE!

During this week we were told that we were allowed to make ammendments of our opening sequence.

So what we did was we changed the voice over as it was very low; and also we were told that the sound was very confusing as there was a lot of background noise. So we changed all this to make it a lot more clearer.

Here we alsdo fixed the music as it was overlapping and did not fit the action happening.

THE MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE: was the types of shots used; we need to include more close ups in order to make our ideas clear. E.g. a close up shot of the book to show the killings.

Group 1: Helema & Toboare

What was level 4 quality (excellent)?

  • holding a steady shot where appropriate
  • framing shot including and excluding elements as appropriate
  • using sound with images and editing appropriatley for the task set
  • using varied shot transitions and other effects selectivley

What was level 3 quality (proficient)?

  • using titles appropriatley
  • editing so that meaning is apparent to thje viewer
  • using a variety of shot distances

General comments of what I really liked about this opening sequence are:

  • I really like the transitions that were used as they were effective and they allowed the audinece to follow what was going on. It was very clear and precise in the storyline and the purpose of the opening sequence.

General comments of what I thought could be improved about this opening sequence are:

  • The titles- the idea I think was very creative however it was very hard to even see that they were titles- I only realsied after watching it twice that it was titles and not just a peice of the school setting.

Overall, I would give this group level ___3__ because most of their work from the syllabus is within the level __3___ bracket.Overall, I would give this group a mark of ___47__ .

Changes to title

Due to the time restrictions that we had of trying to get our opening sequences complete we did not stick to  our original idea of titles by planning on using props that would have the credits on them. Instead we just simply used the titles on i Movie as we did not have enough time.

Saturday, 24 April 2010

Changes we made or added for our last draft + final shot list

1. The length of the dialogue between the main characters
2. We added more props the femme fetale's hat
3. The diary- we changed the layout of the page and added headlines making it clear as to how the victims died. (using less information on the page as this would only be used as a flashback)
4. The leg shot of the femme fetale walking we split this in two
5. multiple shots of multiple open diary and looking through the book
6. We changed the clock and added more shots to show the three different times and that time has passed before the femme fetale makes the call
7. The investigator having a letter from the femme fetale (which made the conversation sound more realistic)
8. The poision we changed this into a small perfume port bottle
9. And the ending of the opening sequence instead of the femme fetale closing the diary with hand and ring showing- it has changed to the femme fetale slamming down the phone on the investigator, showing her dominance and authority she has over the investigator.

What we kept from the feedback we were given

From the feedback we were given the things we took on borad was the flashbacks showing the killings of the men, and we filmed this on the 22nd of April. We also used the idea of the femme fetale looking up at the clock three times showing the importance of the time.

And also the the idea of using different shots when the femme fetale is having a conversation with the investigator.

Most importantly: Shortening the dialogue between the femme fetale and the investigator and using her voice over; also the idea of the investigator having an envelope with the picture in it was alos a suggestion from our teacher. Instead of having a pro longed dialogue between two people.

This is our complete version of our opening sequence.

Feedback for our Final Draft

During the easter half term we used this time to edit what we had filmed so far. So today what we did was Edit and then got feedback from our teacher on what she thought. This is our second draft of our opening sequence that I was supposed to post up before the easter holiday.

Filming for our Final Draft

Today we filmed for the preperation of our final draft. We had to focus on feedback that we were given from our second draft. This was crucial as things such as Continuity and time was something that we had to ensure was right. At first we had problems with the match on action but as we were filming we were making sure that we had used a range of shots to help us with what we intended to achieve

However things that need to be completed after the easter is

  • Editing
  • A new storyboard
  • Planning for the Evaluation
  • Music
  • Titles
  • Processes of changes.

Feedback from 2nd draft

  • Ms suggested that we should film Mica crossing her legs and that we should have a shot of her turing around in the chair
  • To place the camera on the table on the table before mica opens the book
  • Ms also suggested that we change thePages of the men as there is too much information on them.
  • And to take out the page with the car crash and have ot to something that is easy to film. to show in the flashback
Ms then gave us a whole new structure of what the opening sequence should know look like:

  • Heels walking ( But we need a still shot of the heels)

  • Side of heels like last time

  • Mica sitting down

  • Crossing legs a close up shot of her legs

  • (camera across the desk) shot of mica straightening up (Victoria u know what this means u can demonstrate if u need to)

  • Close up shot of the front of the book - Mica looks at the clock- shot of the clock

  • Then Mica opening the book (across shot)

  • Close up shot of page 1 (1st victim)

  • Flashback of his death

  • Reverse shot of mica’s face (e.g. smurk)

  • Looks at clock

  • Shot of clock 10 mins before

  • Close up shot of page 2 (2nd victim)

  • 2nd flashback

  • Reverse shot of mica’s face (e.g. raised eyebrow)

  • Looks at clock

  • Shot of clock

  • Close up of page 3

  • 3rd flashback

  • Reverse shot of mica’s face

  • Looks at clock

  • Shot of clock 4 pm

  • Tobarae’s part

  • Close up shot of note saying 4

  • Toborae walking to phone booth

  • Close up of Mica dialling

  • Toborae picking up

  • “ so you got my message

  • I guess I did

  • Mica talks about James, Arthur and Randolph THIS IS THE DEFINITE ORDER THE FALSHBACKS AND EVERYTHING!

  • “ You fool what’s up with you why are u killing people” = not script just idea

  • Her laughing

  • Out of his face on page in book

  • Close pf mica pulling out poison poison on page etc

2nd Draft Editing

Today I spent my 2hours editing our second draft that is due in today. This is crucial for the group as it will then give us a guideline as to where we are interms of marks and levels and also how our opening sequence can be improved.

I feel relieved that we have our 2nd draft done and that it is much better than our first. Once we get feedback from our class we will then change this into a quick time and upload it onto you tube as we did with our preliminaries and first drafts.

One day left before 2nd draft is due

Today's lesson was quite a tight squeeze as we only have one day left until our second draft is due and we have A LOT of filming to do. So today we cracked on and didnt waste any time what so ever. SO we edited the filming that we did over the weekend which was the investigator's part in the phonebooth.

Although after the feedback from our teacher we were told that the investigators part has taken up atleast a minute of or opening sequence. So Adriana and Myself spent at least 5 minutes cutting down certains parts so that the investigator's part is quick, snappy, and too the point.

From this I then remembered Props and other things so what I did was I brpught into school a small bottle that we were going to use as a poision bottle while Victoria and Adriana sorted out how we were going to make the rest of what we have to film shorter. As i found a logo on the computer Adriana and Victoria then shared their new ideas and changes that they decided and these were:
- Making the femme fetale open the door straight away rather then walking towards her room door, as this would take up alot of time.

- We should have a close up of footsteps to desk instead.

- Instead of suign a collage we should stick to the images in the diary as to how the men died. This was Adriana's idea.

So this evening we are planning on gettin a lot done, and what we have left to film is

-The femme fetale in her room making the phone call to the investigator and also the diary with all the death's inside.

And then after school tommorrow we are going to edit what we've done.

Looking at Music

Today after school I started on the music that I would like to put into my opening sequence, this was crucial as it took a lot of time and effor to find the right instrument sounds that woul fit in well with the genre of film noir. During this time I also expereimented with different sounds and themes. After an hour of putting my music together I then realised that the music I had just composed sound a little to livley and happy; so I asked my teacher for advice and I was given the exac same feedback as my prediction.

So what I am going to do is with my group tommorrow I am going to go through the sounds with my grup show them what they think of the music and then go through anythng that they think needs changing. Even though it is my duty to focus on music I still feel that seeking comfort in my peers as feedback will improve things.

Filming the investigator's part

Today we met up to film the investigator's conversation with the femme fetale. I brought along with me the props of the trench coat and the investigators hat. It didn't take that long to film this probably 45 mins the max; so to help us we used a fellow student that is in our class to help us play the investigator.

Our first Draft of our Opening sequenc

We had to do the same process of uploading our opening sequences to You tube, as we did with our preliminary.

Wednesday, 17 March 2010

Target's to focus on while filming 2nd Draft

Refilming Targets:

Target: Everyone is contributing to the filming and editing elements
Evidence: Have photos/ footage of you completing editing or filming
Why we choose this as a target: we choose this as a target as at the beginning we had problems working as a group and time schedules. So this is our target as we now know what is required for us inorder for us to go from strength to strength.

Target: Voicveovers have to be done first so that we know the length of time, and so that it synchronises well with what is happening
Evidence: to show this we can record the voice overs on the imacs
Why we choose this as a target: we choose this target as this would allow us to know exactly what and where things will go.

Target: Know the length of time of what you are filming
Evidence: Bring short term plans/ storyboards with you
Why we choose this as a target: we choose this as a target as our first draft was 3 minutes so we have to take care of time

Target: Know the mark scheme and what we are being graded on, make sure or filming and edititing are editing meet the criteria's requirements covered on the construction mark scheme.
Evidence: bring mark scheme with me
Why we choose this as a target: this is so that we know that we are on the right track and that what we're filmign makes sence.

Target: Holding a steady, don't let the camera be too shaky
Evidence: Use a tripod
Why we choose this: as in our first draft of filming our camera was shaky.

Our one-to-one session

During this lesson our media teacher decided to give us feedback on what needs to improve and what needs to change in our first draft of our opening sequence.

  • Ms suggested that we keep the pace slow as it emphasises the femme fetale's power; Mica indicated to her that one of her idea that we could use to change the opening sequence is by speeding it up. But Ms thought it would be better not to do this.
  • Ms also indicated to us that we should make the collage like a list- so she suggested that we start again. And that we should use more close up shots to show what it is.
  • We need more props
  • One of the most important things ms gave us feedback on was the conventions; as one of the main conventions is lighting so ms suggested that we buy a flah light to stick to the conventions of the subject. So in order to get a range of lighting contrast Ms decided that we should use a flood light to film in the dark, as a lot of shadows are used in film noir.
  • If we are going to use the flood light we should consider filming this twice once with the flood light and another without the flood light.
  • Ms liked the idea of the heels and she said that it just needs too be filmed better, one way in which we can achieve this is by putting the camera on the floor when filming Mica's feet (keeping the slow pace walking)
  • One thing we missed out was putting up the distribution company.
  • Ms suggested that we could use flashbacks- of how the femme fetale's cictims died.
  • We should include illustrations as to she is going to kill the investigator
  • The femme fetale should call the investigator to tease him about his gullable frame of mind.
  • We could include of voice over of four different killings

Feedback from class on our first draft

During the week of the 8-12th of March we just used our time to edit what we had done. Even though we still had a lot of things to add such as titles and music we still managed to get it done. During this week Adriana worked on titles, while Mica and I edited. However I started working on the music when I realsied that I was putting myself under a lot of strain as one member of our group was missing. So I decided to leave out our music and only put in what I had worked on so far and not the completed thing as I felt it was unfair that only three of us were working on our opening sequence when it is supose to be 4 of us.

Bearing this in mind- During our lesson on the 10th our teacher gathered the class up and we all watched each groups opening sequenec followed by feeedback and a level using our mark schemes. When gettin feedback on ours we were told that

  • Our opening sequence is too long
  • It is very prolonged
  • some of the scenes take to long to go into the next
  • it does not look like a film noir the only convention that we have stuck to is the idea of the femme fetale
  • I need to be more precise in what I want my audience to think and know
Gettin this feedback from our first draft it was said to be at a level 1
So what Mica decided was to chnage things up a bit by speeding it up making things look like the femme fetale is in a rush. Adriana then decided that we should use a phone beox for the investogator to show this more as it is a convetion.

Last Day of Filming for our 1st Draft

The weekend of the 8-9th of March Mica and I went out filming; as our 1st draft was due the wednesday, however what we also ended up doing on this day was starting from scratch; as when editing we realised that we were going to have to re film quite a few parts;l so we started frm scratch over that weekend. Betweeen Mica and I we managed to get a lot done so we got up to the scene where the femme fetale gets a phone call. And weended it there due to the time frame we were given to film.

On Tuesday the 9th Adriana Mica and I went out to film our last scene of our opening seqeunce as we had our deadline of our final draft the following day.
So during this time of filming we did the collage scene where the femme fetale walks up to the collage and sticks the photo of the investigator on it, and also the scene where the femme fetale finds the photo of the investigator, then sticks it on the collage.

We did a couple takes on this as we wanted it to look continous to what we previously did.

Music Idea

My idea for music I was thinking of using string instrumnets as well as brass or base sounds. I decided to use these sounds as it will fit in with the mood and the atmosphere that we are trying to set. I wanted to use these sounds as I think that it will allow the audience to get an idea of the theme and the genre.

However as a group we have started expereimenting with sounds and other things. And we have started planning as to where we think sounds should go; and where they fit in.

Hopefuly by the end of today we know what and where the sounds belong in our opening sequnece.

Our short term plan for the weekend of 6/3/10

This is what we plan to do over the weekend; as we did not film over the previous weekend. Our deadline is the 1oth of March and we intend to get as much done as possible over this period of time.

At this moment we are still working on props and getting everything sorted; however we also might end up starting all over again as we realised that a lot of things are not up to a decent standard as we would like it to be.

Posting Our Preliminaries on You Tube

Today in our media lesson we posted up our preliminariy exercise on youtube.
To do this we had to export into quicktime (export for websharing) Then waited for it to upload.

This is all a learning process for me as I have learnt how to use a variety of technology devices such as exporting files and uploadind data using quicktime. By changing the format means that we have compressed what our file so that it is of a lower quality.

Editing what we filmed so far and Changes Needed

Today in our lesson we looked over what we filmed over the half term on the apple mac computers so that we can edit our work.

As a group however we realised that there is quite a lot of things that need to be edited and re-filmed as this our first try at filming our opening sequence there is a lot of changes that need to be made.

Problems we faced:

One of the problems we faced when we were looking over our work on the mac computers was that; there was a lot of scenes that we filmed, where the camera appeared to be very shaky. We were told that this is one of the basic skills of filming and without this we would not gain a lot of marks.

So I decided to address the situation as we thought it may have been due to the tripod we were given. The problem with the tripod we had was that it does not extend that far; and a lot of scenes that we are filming require the tripod to extend to a certain extent. But due to us not having a tripod that extends, we hand the camera had to be hand held; which probably is the explanation to the scene coming out extremely shaky.

Changes we need to make:

  • Side view of Mica walking- we need to keep this the same but the camera here has to be extremely steady.
  • The scene where Mica opens the door and begins to walk into the room (as the camera moves)
  • When Mica looks at the phone as it rings on her desk; we decided to change this into an eyeline match or a point of view shot.
What we need to film again:
  • We need to re-film Mica walking towards office door by using different angles and shots.
  • The silhouette
  • Pan of Mica's body as she walks into office
  • Mica sitting down as she reaches desk- we can do this by using different shots.
  • The scene where Mica picks up the diary to look at her plan.
  • Side view of Mica putting legs up.
Things we still have to film:
  • The collage scene of Mica walking up to it- as we reveal her plan
  • Mica closing door as she enters her office.
What we edited:
  • We split the scene in half where Mica picks up Diary.
  • Mica reading Diary- we split this scene and then cut out the part that we didn't want or need.
From editing what we have filmed so far; and by looking at work so far I made me realise that as a group we have a lot of work to do and also a lot of re filming to do also. This made me realise the importance of time when filming and how crucial it is to get things done with accuracy once if possible.

When I spoke to my group members today I discussed rehearsing what we want to film in the media room at school. So that when we reach our location everything runs smoothly. This is because when looking at what we've filmed the acting looks very directed rather than natural; which may be a problem as it needs to look professional and at a good standard. As a group we have a lot of work ahead of us to undertake; which I will ensure gets done on time for our first draft deadline which is on the 10th of March- which is in a week's time from now.

Our 2nd Day of Filming-

In our last day of our scheduled time for filming (18/2/10) we decided to touch up on the parts we have not yet done. So what we did was we started filming the parts which we did not get to complete in our first day of filming.

Then we then looked at our storyboard and started filming along those lines. However what we did do was we started filming more parts; which means that we may have to alter our storyboard for the third time.

So on our second day of filming we did the scene: where Mica is sitting at here desk and she gets a phone call from the investigator. She then answers the phone and threatens the investigator showing her lack of fear and her dominance as a femme fetale. While doing so we managed to shoot this part from different angles. We added this scene in as we wanted to use the props and we also wanted to show her character come to life.

As we have a limited filming duration to stick to; this is important as we wanted to create dramatic irony as it would engage the audience into wanting to find out the end result.

During this filming time that we had we also filmed the footsteps sound of Mica walking as this is how our opening sequence starts. However as mentioned previously in another post we have not filmed according or in order of our opening sequence we have added and missed out parts.

However one of the main things that we still have yet to film is the suspense and cliff hanger of our opening sequence is the scene with the collage. Which we still have yet to complete.

So for now, now that the half term has come to an end; when we get back to school we will be expected to show our teachers the work that we have worked on over this half term. We will then be given feedback on changes and improvements that need to be made; but in the mean time in lessons we will be editing our preliminary exercises we did previously.

.. Of we go- Filming process Begins

Today my group and I went to our location to film- initially we were suppose to have three days during the half term to film. But yesterday we never got the chance as the office we were supposed to film is was being used. This caused a huge delay to our intended plans; however what we did do in the mean time was plan what we would like to do for the following day which was today.

Today: When we started filming; there was some inaccurate parts as we ended up adding parts that was not initially on our storyboard; we decided to do this as we thought our storyboard was rather short and it needed more parts added to it.

While filming to avoid mistakes in continuity Adriana took pictures on her phone; to make sure nad check to see if what we were doing was right.

While filming we all took turns to film- as different shots required a different section of the room which was were each person was standing. This was quicker rather than having one person do it.

From this I learnt a lot as it allowed express a multiple of skills with new emerging ideas and also filming has also allowed me to know and come to terms with the point that this is a very time consuming and motivational skill. That's needs to be persisitant when it comes to producing our final peice.

Shot List and Storyboard for preliminary Original

This is our original storyboard and shot list; but after editing we will have an improved one.

Learning How to Edit-Individual

In today's lesson the class was giving a step- by- step guide as to how the apple mac computers work and how to edit our work. This is our first time using the apple mac's computers; and it is also our first time editing; so as an exercise and part of our research and planning marks we then edited our preliminary exercise.

One of the main and most important features that was noted here is that; when using apple computers files are not deleted. This is a drag- and- drop system where work is dragged into the trash bin.

However the three main programmes that we are going to use to help us edit are

  • iTunes

  • Garage Band

  • iMovie

The process in this involves:

  • When I enter into iMovie click on create new project
  • Give the file a name
  • When I want to save my work I drag it either to the desktop or drag it to my file
  • When uploading something- on the bar click the scissors (Which is the editing mode)
  • To help us keep our work organised we were advised to number or letter or clips.
  • At the bottom of the screen there is a grey strip

1. This button makes it easier to edit clips.

2. This is where sound can be edited.

3. This is the grey scale where clips can be dragged into to for editing and other features.

Universal Rule: Anything highlighted in Blue is what would play. All clips would not play if only on section is clicked on and is highlighted in blue.
I found this particularly interesting as; when I first opened up iMovie it looked similar to the music programme Cubase, which is what I used at GCSE to produce my coursework. And i initally thought that the same thing would apply to iMovie; but it does not, there are a couple differences between the two. And these are

The way in which information is played- in iMovie clips are only played through when they are highlighted; wheres in comparison to Cubase everything is played all at once; once play is pressed.

However iMovie is similar to Cubase in the way that I had an idea of the theory but in practise iMovie uses different functions and are more specific to the idea of making music that is specialised for media use.

1. When uploading the bar needs to be on the scissors as this is the editing mode.

2. Media- is for audio you can import through iTunes or garage band.

3.Editing is used for three things- Transition, special effects and titles.

Transition- is something between two clips; it is moving from one clip to another e.g; Overlap (echo effect), fade Out, Billow, Ripple etc.

at 0.32-0.35 sec echo effect is used. An example of what overlapping looks like which is similar to an echo effect.

In a transition you cannot have a special effect; only at times depending on the effct that is trying to be used alongside this.

One of the main things we were told about transitions is that: If using a long transition; i need sufficent time between the clips as this will then affect the message that is trying to be put across to the audience.

When clicking on the media button- as this deals with audio information we were shown techniques of how to add sound to our peices; and this can be done by dragging and dropping sog as to where we would like to hear it in our preliminary.

What i found interesting about this technique is that if the sound is not in the right place; by clicking a yellow line- the sound can be increased- which is effective as it can relate to the purpose or the genre of our opening sequence.

1. Mode change- purple strip- underneath this is a layering system we can have more than one sound underneath. And also this purple line is useful if I want to add more purple.

To change sound - what I need to do is to click on the dots (which can also mute things as well) On the dots I can turn i into a flat line; with this tool I can also slow down the nosie or make the noise in a gradual change.

1. Transitions

2. Video Fx- this is to make things look old, or confused or blurrly; and by using any of these features enhance and intensifies the genre that is trying to be put across.

3. Video Fx

To acheive level 4- Credits need to be shown throughout openign sequence.

1. This is splitting clip process- firstly select clip (here it has to be in the circle mode -clock symobol)
then move arrow to where i neeed it then go to edit. and press split video clip playhead.

Voice overs- can also be split so that it can play over voice

Short and Long Term PlanningShooting List

This is the long term Plan from now till our final deadline. The dates that are coloured in grey are half term weeks.

This is the short term plan for what we intend to film over the half term

Changes In Our Preliminary Exercise

One of the main changes that was made was our preliminary exercise was the script; which Adriana then fixed after we watched over our work.

1. INT. HALLWAY. JANUARY. DAYTIME 1.

MICA OPENS THE DOOR LEADING TO THE CLASSROOM

2. INT. CLASSROOM. JANUARY. DAYTIME 2.

MICA WALKS INTO THE ROOM SEEING ADRIANA AT THE TABLE

MICA

Hi Adriana! What’s going on?

ADRIANA

Hi Meesh!

ADRIANA DRINKS WATER ON THE TABLE. MICA WALKS TOWARDS THE TABLE THAT ADRIANA IS SITTING AT

MICA

How was the party? I want all the goss! Tell me about Kasey & Sophie & Tara & the birthday girl. I wanna know everything.

ADRIANA

It was awful. Listen to this: Kasey lost her weave. Tara dropped down in her heels and Sophie I don’t know what Sophie was doing; she was having the time of her life. And Juliet well that’s another story.

MICA GASPS AT WHAT ADRIANA HAS JUST TOLD HER

MICA

What! What about Juliet and her mum? Don’t tell me her mum came back. Did her mum find out she had that party. Tell me, tell me!

ADRIANA LOOKS AT MICA INTENTLY

ADRIANA

The party was at full swing and she saw Juliet and Mark!

My Experience of our Preliminary Exercise

On Tuesday the 26th of January we did our Preliminary excerise; this was a good expereince for me as I learnt alot about filming and changes that can easily happen when filming. This includes things such as

  • The changes that happen when we film e.g. planning to film a long shot but instead when filming the shot changes to a mid shot, which then leads to changes in the storyboard.
Other changes we experienced when shooting this preliminary exercise is the change in the script; when we showed our teacher out intentions for our preliminary exercise we said that the script was too short; so due to lack of time we improvised.
This was new to me as it then meant that we had to add more to our script after we watched over what we had filmed.

We also added more shots as we felt that we wanted to include a variety to show the skills we were cape able of. Overall though this meant a lot of changes are going to added to what we already did like
our storyboard: we are going to have to add things as we made our preliminary longer
shot list
script
and our overhead plan.

When we edit this on the apple mac computers then we are going to do our 2nd drafts..

Preliminary Exercise- Planning

This week we were told to start our Preliminary Exercise, we were then given a list of things that we have to do in order to make this successful; so as a group we split all the things amongst ourselves.

Overhead Plan- Victoria (This is to plan where things are layed out and how the cameras will me moved/placed

Script- Adriana

Mica- Storyboard

Shotlist- Jamilla (Me)

The first thing we did as a group was the plan for the storyboard; this made it easier for the whole group as we did the script and draft and shots all in one. Howevere the most important that was emphasised to us was that the "Preliminary needs to be as simple as possible"

Props--- Water

Key:

---------- (Footsteps of character)

Person A- walking
Perosn B-at the table

Here is the Plan for our Preliminary

1) Mid shot person A is opening the door (the camera is position behind the person)

2) Close up shot of person A's hand on door handle

3) P.O.V shot from person B of person A opening door.

4) Eye line shot of person A looking B drinking from a water bottle (holding in an upwards position)

5) Mid shot of person B putting water down

6) Long shot of person A walking towards person B and says: "Hi how was the party?"

7) Side view of person A and 180 ° rule both both in the shot (PANNING)

8) Over the shoulder shot of person B responding "It was awful listen to this..."

9) P.O.V of person A looking at perosn B "what"

10) Panning P.OV shot of person B looking around room.

Our Improved Storyboard with More shots

This is new storyboard with our final changes of more camera shots and angles; e.g. match on action and POV shots.

Analysing a Script

This is an example of a scipt that is used in the film BrokenEmbrace.

  • Interior- means that the scene is shot inside
  • Day- Meaning time of day ( so the script could say Night also)
  • Exterior- Means the scene is set outside
  • #'s indicate- what scene it is taken from in the stroy board so that it is easier to follow
3. IMAGES THAT ACCOMPANY THE VOICE -OFF. HARRY CAINE’S DAILY
RITUALS.

Despite his fifty years and his blindness, Harry is a man that keeps
himself in great physical shape.
Harry’s Home. Interior. Day.
In the morning: he places a CD in a player. By himself, he selects
and starts the program on a treadmill. He steps on and begins
exercising.
He takes a shower (“Mateo Blanco and Harry Caine shared the same
person, me, but a time came when, all of a sudden...”), the camera
pans over various parts of his body under the running water, dense
waves of white foam slide down his skin, as if it was a landscape.
The hangers have Braille-stickers that indicate the characteristic of
the clothing they hold. (All the closets have sliding doors)
In his bedroom, he opens the closet and looks for the clothes he will
wear. Despite the fact that he cannot see himself, he stands in front
of a mirror. He smiles, pleased with his appearance .
Everything in the house is rigorously ordered. All that Harry needs
to ascertain the identity of the things around him is his touch.
He exits onto the street.
4. HARRY’S STREET. EXT. DAY. PEDESTRIAN CROSSING.
Harry traverses (aided by an umbrella?) the pedestrian crossing. When
he reaches the opposite sidewalk, the credits appear on the black and
white stripes that mark the crossing. The crossway is clear of
pedestrians so that only cars pass through (not many) and as they do,
8
they run over the letters of the credits, making them disappear, in
pieces. On a different stripe, a new title appears and as it does, it
is run over and destroyed by another car. Like this, successively.
5. SIDEWALK ACROSS FROM HARRY’S BUILDING. EXT. DAY.
Just on the sidewalk across from where Harry lives, there is a newsstand,
and next to it, perhaps on the nearest corner, a bar.
Harry buys the newspaper at the news-stand. This is part of his daily
routine. He greets the attendant familiarly. He has the kind of face
that provokes pity. He grabs the newspaper, folds it, and places it
under his arm.
Cut to.
6. BAR ACROSS THE WAY. INT. DAY.
He enters the bar. He leans down somewhere on the bar table. Just as
soon as he sees him, he is approached by his Waiter Friend, an
approachable guy, somewhere in his forties, who is helped by a South
American waitress, wearing her makeup since the early part of the
morning, whom he is obviously screwing. He brings him a coffee. All
of these actions are part of a daily ritual.
WAITER FRIEND
Do you want me to read you something from the
newspaper?
HARRY
No, thanks. I am off on a stroll.

The last changes before marking is due

In today's lesson we looked at how to write up a script; and we used the template Anna Thomas used as a template and guideance to help us. So our challange is to write up a script by Friday.

We were told that the title needs to be in CAPITAL LETTERS
The number of scences needs to be on both sides in bold

EXTERIOR/ INTERIOR Location -Time -Day

Everything needs to be aligned on edge is descripted of what is going on in the scene. Props must be listed in this paragraph Actor centre alignment in capitals 2 indents dialogue.

We came up with a To Do List:

  • Write up script
  • Description of Scene
  • New Storyboard
  • Decorate Diary
  • Title for the openign sequence
  • Collage
  • Discription of location on script.
From this list as a group we decided to split up the work equally.

Adriana- Collage
Jamilla- Discription of location script
Mica- New storyboard, Decorate Diary
Victoria- Putting the script together.

Location: Mission Accomplished

On the 4th of January myself and Adriana went to go and have a look at the place where we had decided to film. The location I found was at the Metropolitan Black police Association (BPA) When we arrived we were given a tour and asked to choose between the rooms available as to where we would like to film.

After looking around myself and Adriana came to a conclusion on the room in which we would like to use.
We choose this room to film in as it was very spacious had very few equipment inside; whereas the other room was an office that had a lot of office equipment which would mean that we were going to have to replace everything back in the position where we found it.
Another problem with the other room was that it had a notice board which we were going to decide to use that for the collage; however this would not be possible as it was a fixed notice board and could not be moved. Otherwise the room would have been ideal for filming as it did not have that much lighting inside which would have suited to our genre of film Noir.

This is a photo of all the stationary we would be using

This is a folder,Book, Stapler and a pen. The folder is suppose to represent what we would like to use the credits on Book is to represent the diary.
