My Experience of our Preliminary Exercise

On Tuesday the 26th of January we did our Preliminary excerise; this was a good expereince for me as I learnt alot about filming and changes that can easily happen when filming. This includes things such as

  • The changes that happen when we film e.g. planning to film a long shot but instead when filming the shot changes to a mid shot, which then leads to changes in the storyboard.
Other changes we experienced when shooting this preliminary exercise is the change in the script; when we showed our teacher out intentions for our preliminary exercise we said that the script was too short; so due to lack of time we improvised.
This was new to me as it then meant that we had to add more to our script after we watched over what we had filmed.

We also added more shots as we felt that we wanted to include a variety to show the skills we were cape able of. Overall though this meant a lot of changes are going to added to what we already did like
our storyboard: we are going to have to add things as we made our preliminary longer
shot list
script
and our overhead plan.

When we edit this on the apple mac computers then we are going to do our 2nd drafts..

Preliminary Exercise- Planning

This week we were told to start our Preliminary Exercise, we were then given a list of things that we have to do in order to make this successful; so as a group we split all the things amongst ourselves.

Overhead Plan- Victoria (This is to plan where things are layed out and how the cameras will me moved/placed

Script- Adriana

Mica- Storyboard

Shotlist- Jamilla (Me)

The first thing we did as a group was the plan for the storyboard; this made it easier for the whole group as we did the script and draft and shots all in one. Howevere the most important that was emphasised to us was that the "Preliminary needs to be as simple as possible"

Person A- walking
Perosn B-at the table

Here is the Plan for our Preliminary

5) Mid shot of person B putting water down

6) Long shot of person A walking towards person B and says: "Hi how was the party?"

7) Side view of person A and 180 ° rule both both in the shot (PANNING)

Our Improved Storyboard with More shots

This is new storyboard with our final changes of more camera shots and angles; e.g. match on action and POV shots.

Analysing a Script

This is an example of a scipt that is used in the film BrokenEmbrace.

  • Interior- means that the scene is shot inside
  • Day- Meaning time of day ( so the script could say Night also)
  • Exterior- Means the scene is set outside
  • #'s indicate- what scene it is taken from in the stroy board so that it is easier to follow
3. IMAGES THAT ACCOMPANY THE VOICE -OFF. HARRY CAINE’S DAILY
RITUALS.

Despite his fifty years and his blindness, Harry is a man that keeps
himself in great physical shape.
Harry’s Home. Interior. Day.
In the morning: he places a CD in a player. By himself, he selects
and starts the program on a treadmill. He steps on and begins
exercising.
He takes a shower (“Mateo Blanco and Harry Caine shared the same
person, me, but a time came when, all of a sudden...”), the camera
pans over various parts of his body under the running water, dense
waves of white foam slide down his skin, as if it was a landscape.
The hangers have Braille-stickers that indicate the characteristic of
the clothing they hold. (All the closets have sliding doors)
In his bedroom, he opens the closet and looks for the clothes he will
wear. Despite the fact that he cannot see himself, he stands in front
of a mirror. He smiles, pleased with his appearance .
Everything in the house is rigorously ordered. All that Harry needs
to ascertain the identity of the things around him is his touch.
He exits onto the street.
4. HARRY’S STREET. EXT. DAY. PEDESTRIAN CROSSING.
Harry traverses (aided by an umbrella?) the pedestrian crossing. When
he reaches the opposite sidewalk, the credits appear on the black and
white stripes that mark the crossing. The crossway is clear of
pedestrians so that only cars pass through (not many) and as they do,
8
they run over the letters of the credits, making them disappear, in
pieces. On a different stripe, a new title appears and as it does, it
is run over and destroyed by another car. Like this, successively.
5. SIDEWALK ACROSS FROM HARRY’S BUILDING. EXT. DAY.
Just on the sidewalk across from where Harry lives, there is a newsstand,
and next to it, perhaps on the nearest corner, a bar.
Harry buys the newspaper at the news-stand. This is part of his daily
routine. He greets the attendant familiarly. He has the kind of face
that provokes pity. He grabs the newspaper, folds it, and places it
under his arm.
Cut to.
6. BAR ACROSS THE WAY. INT. DAY.
He enters the bar. He leans down somewhere on the bar table. Just as
soon as he sees him, he is approached by his Waiter Friend, an
approachable guy, somewhere in his forties, who is helped by a South
American waitress, wearing her makeup since the early part of the
morning, whom he is obviously screwing. He brings him a coffee. All
of these actions are part of a daily ritual.
WAITER FRIEND
Do you want me to read you something from the
newspaper?
HARRY
No, thanks. I am off on a stroll.

The last changes before marking is due

In today's lesson we looked at how to write up a script; and we used the template Anna Thomas used as a template and guideance to help us. So our challange is to write up a script by Friday.

We were told that the title needs to be in CAPITAL LETTERS
The number of scences needs to be on both sides in bold

EXTERIOR/ INTERIOR Location -Time -Day

Everything needs to be aligned on edge is descripted of what is going on in the scene. Props must be listed in this paragraph Actor centre alignment in capitals 2 indents dialogue.

We came up with a To Do List:

  • Write up script
  • Description of Scene
  • New Storyboard
  • Decorate Diary
  • Title for the openign sequence
  • Collage
  • Discription of location on script.
From this list as a group we decided to split up the work equally.

Adriana- Collage
Jamilla- Discription of location script
Mica- New storyboard, Decorate Diary
Victoria- Putting the script together.

Location: Mission Accomplished

On the 4th of January myself and Adriana went to go and have a look at the place where we had decided to film. The location I found was at the Metropolitan Black police Association (BPA) When we arrived we were given a tour and asked to choose between the rooms available as to where we would like to film.

After looking around myself and Adriana came to a conclusion on the room in which we would like to use.
We choose this room to film in as it was very spacious had very few equipment inside; whereas the other room was an office that had a lot of office equipment which would mean that we were going to have to replace everything back in the position where we found it.
Another problem with the other room was that it had a notice board which we were going to decide to use that for the collage; however this would not be possible as it was a fixed notice board and could not be moved. Otherwise the room would have been ideal for filming as it did not have that much lighting inside which would have suited to our genre of film Noir.

This is a photo of all the stationary we would be using

This is a folder,Book, Stapler and a pen. The folder is suppose to represent what we would like to use the credits on Book is to represent the diary.
