Editing what we filmed so far and Changes Needed

Today in our lesson we looked over what we filmed over the half term on the apple mac computers so that we can edit our work.

As a group however we realised that there is quite a lot of things that need to be edited and re-filmed as this our first try at filming our opening sequence there is a lot of changes that need to be made.

Problems we faced:

One of the problems we faced when we were looking over our work on the mac computers was that; there was a lot of scenes that we filmed, where the camera appeared to be very shaky. We were told that this is one of the basic skills of filming and without this we would not gain a lot of marks.

So I decided to address the situation as we thought it may have been due to the tripod we were given. The problem with the tripod we had was that it does not extend that far; and a lot of scenes that we are filming require the tripod to extend to a certain extent. But due to us not having a tripod that extends, we hand the camera had to be hand held; which probably is the explanation to the scene coming out extremely shaky.

Changes we need to make:

  • Side view of Mica walking- we need to keep this the same but the camera here has to be extremely steady.
  • The scene where Mica opens the door and begins to walk into the room (as the camera moves)
  • When Mica looks at the phone as it rings on her desk; we decided to change this into an eyeline match or a point of view shot.
What we need to film again:
  • We need to re-film Mica walking towards office door by using different angles and shots.
  • The silhouette
  • Pan of Mica's body as she walks into office
  • Mica sitting down as she reaches desk- we can do this by using different shots.
  • The scene where Mica picks up the diary to look at her plan.
  • Side view of Mica putting legs up.
Things we still have to film:
  • The collage scene of Mica walking up to it- as we reveal her plan
  • Mica closing door as she enters her office.
What we edited:
  • We split the scene in half where Mica picks up Diary.
  • Mica reading Diary- we split this scene and then cut out the part that we didn't want or need.
From editing what we have filmed so far; and by looking at work so far I made me realise that as a group we have a lot of work to do and also a lot of re filming to do also. This made me realise the importance of time when filming and how crucial it is to get things done with accuracy once if possible.

When I spoke to my group members today I discussed rehearsing what we want to film in the media room at school. So that when we reach our location everything runs smoothly. This is because when looking at what we've filmed the acting looks very directed rather than natural; which may be a problem as it needs to look professional and at a good standard. As a group we have a lot of work ahead of us to undertake; which I will ensure gets done on time for our first draft deadline which is on the 10th of March- which is in a week's time from now.

Our 2nd Day of Filming-

In our last day of our scheduled time for filming (18/2/10) we decided to touch up on the parts we have not yet done. So what we did was we started filming the parts which we did not get to complete in our first day of filming.

Then we then looked at our storyboard and started filming along those lines. However what we did do was we started filming more parts; which means that we may have to alter our storyboard for the third time.

So on our second day of filming we did the scene: where Mica is sitting at here desk and she gets a phone call from the investigator. She then answers the phone and threatens the investigator showing her lack of fear and her dominance as a femme fetale. While doing so we managed to shoot this part from different angles. We added this scene in as we wanted to use the props and we also wanted to show her character come to life.

As we have a limited filming duration to stick to; this is important as we wanted to create dramatic irony as it would engage the audience into wanting to find out the end result.

During this filming time that we had we also filmed the footsteps sound of Mica walking as this is how our opening sequence starts. However as mentioned previously in another post we have not filmed according or in order of our opening sequence we have added and missed out parts.

However one of the main things that we still have yet to film is the suspense and cliff hanger of our opening sequence is the scene with the collage. Which we still have yet to complete.

So for now, now that the half term has come to an end; when we get back to school we will be expected to show our teachers the work that we have worked on over this half term. We will then be given feedback on changes and improvements that need to be made; but in the mean time in lessons we will be editing our preliminary exercises we did previously.

.. Of we go- Filming process Begins

Today my group and I went to our location to film- initially we were suppose to have three days during the half term to film. But yesterday we never got the chance as the office we were supposed to film is was being used. This caused a huge delay to our intended plans; however what we did do in the mean time was plan what we would like to do for the following day which was today.

Today: When we started filming; there was some inaccurate parts as we ended up adding parts that was not initially on our storyboard; we decided to do this as we thought our storyboard was rather short and it needed more parts added to it.

While filming to avoid mistakes in continuity Adriana took pictures on her phone; to make sure nad check to see if what we were doing was right.

While filming we all took turns to film- as different shots required a different section of the room which was were each person was standing. This was quicker rather than having one person do it.

From this I learnt a lot as it allowed express a multiple of skills with new emerging ideas and also filming has also allowed me to know and come to terms with the point that this is a very time consuming and motivational skill. That's needs to be persisitant when it comes to producing our final peice.

Learning How to Edit-Individual

In today's lesson the class was giving a step- by- step guide as to how the apple mac computers work and how to edit our work. This is our first time using the apple mac's computers; and it is also our first time editing; so as an exercise and part of our research and planning marks we then edited our preliminary exercise.

One of the main and most important features that was noted here is that; when using apple computers files are not deleted. This is a drag- and- drop system where work is dragged into the trash bin.

However the three main programmes that we are going to use to help us edit are

  • iTunes

  • Garage Band

  • iMovie

The process in this involves:

  • When I enter into iMovie click on create new project
  • Give the file a name
  • When I want to save my work I drag it either to the desktop or drag it to my file
  • When uploading something- on the bar click the scissors (Which is the editing mode)
  • To help us keep our work organised we were advised to number or letter or clips.
  • At the bottom of the screen there is a grey strip

1. This button makes it easier to edit clips.

2. This is where sound can be edited.

3. This is the grey scale where clips can be dragged into to for editing and other features.

Universal Rule: Anything highlighted in Blue is what would play. All clips would not play if only on section is clicked on and is highlighted in blue.
I found this particularly interesting as; when I first opened up iMovie it looked similar to the music programme Cubase, which is what I used at GCSE to produce my coursework. And i initally thought that the same thing would apply to iMovie; but it does not, there are a couple differences between the two. And these are

The way in which information is played- in iMovie clips are only played through when they are highlighted; wheres in comparison to Cubase everything is played all at once; once play is pressed.

However iMovie is similar to Cubase in the way that I had an idea of the theory but in practise iMovie uses different functions and are more specific to the idea of making music that is specialised for media use.

1. When uploading the bar needs to be on the scissors as this is the editing mode.

2. Media- is for audio you can import through iTunes or garage band.

3.Editing is used for three things- Transition, special effects and titles.

Transition- is something between two clips; it is moving from one clip to another e.g; Overlap (echo effect), fade Out, Billow, Ripple etc.

at 0.32-0.35 sec echo effect is used. An example of what overlapping looks like which is similar to an echo effect.

In a transition you cannot have a special effect; only at times depending on the effct that is trying to be used alongside this.

One of the main things we were told about transitions is that: If using a long transition; i need sufficent time between the clips as this will then affect the message that is trying to be put across to the audience.

When clicking on the media button- as this deals with audio information we were shown techniques of how to add sound to our peices; and this can be done by dragging and dropping sog as to where we would like to hear it in our preliminary.

What i found interesting about this technique is that if the sound is not in the right place; by clicking a yellow line- the sound can be increased- which is effective as it can relate to the purpose or the genre of our opening sequence.

1. Mode change- purple strip- underneath this is a layering system we can have more than one sound underneath. And also this purple line is useful if I want to add more purple.

To change sound - what I need to do is to click on the dots (which can also mute things as well) On the dots I can turn i into a flat line; with this tool I can also slow down the nosie or make the noise in a gradual change.

1. Transitions

2. Video Fx- this is to make things look old, or confused or blurrly; and by using any of these features enhance and intensifies the genre that is trying to be put across.

3. Video Fx

To acheive level 4- Credits need to be shown throughout openign sequence.

1. This is splitting clip process- firstly select clip (here it has to be in the circle mode -clock symobol)
then move arrow to where i neeed it then go to edit. and press split video clip playhead.

Voice overs- can also be split so that it can play over voice

Short and Long Term PlanningShooting List

This is the long term Plan from now till our final deadline. The dates that are coloured in grey are half term weeks.

This is the short term plan for what we intend to film over the half term

Changes In Our Preliminary Exercise

One of the main changes that was made was our preliminary exercise was the script; which Adriana then fixed after we watched over our work.

1. INT. HALLWAY. JANUARY. DAYTIME 1.

MICA OPENS THE DOOR LEADING TO THE CLASSROOM

2. INT. CLASSROOM. JANUARY. DAYTIME 2.

MICA WALKS INTO THE ROOM SEEING ADRIANA AT THE TABLE

MICA

Hi Adriana! What’s going on?

ADRIANA

Hi Meesh!

ADRIANA DRINKS WATER ON THE TABLE. MICA WALKS TOWARDS THE TABLE THAT ADRIANA IS SITTING AT

MICA

How was the party? I want all the goss! Tell me about Kasey & Sophie & Tara & the birthday girl. I wanna know everything.

ADRIANA

It was awful. Listen to this: Kasey lost her weave. Tara dropped down in her heels and Sophie I don’t know what Sophie was doing; she was having the time of her life. And Juliet well that’s another story.

MICA GASPS AT WHAT ADRIANA HAS JUST TOLD HER

MICA

What! What about Juliet and her mum? Don’t tell me her mum came back. Did her mum find out she had that party. Tell me, tell me!

ADRIANA LOOKS AT MICA INTENTLY

ADRIANA

The party was at full swing and she saw Juliet and Mark!

MICA

NO!

3. INT. CLASSROOM. JANUARY. DAYTIME 3.

ADRIANA

You should have been there meesh.

MICA

But you know I had nothing to wear. I’m looking fat these days. I’ve got more rolls then Greggs.

ADRIANA SAYS LOOKING AWAY AWKWARDLY

ADRIANA

Well I wasn’t going to tell you.

ADRIANA LOOKS AT MICA AS IF SHE HAS LOADS TO TELL

ADRIANA

It was awful, listen to this!

WE SEE MICA’S FACIAL EXPRESSION

MICA

What?
